Summary

“An insightful memoir that uncovers unique stories about matters of the heart。” —Essence

The inspiring New York Times bestseller from Common—the Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Golden Globe–winning musician, actor, and activist—explores how love and mindfulness can build communities and allow you to take better control of your life through actions and words。

Common believes that the phrase “let love have the last word” is not just a declaration; it is a statement of purpose, a daily promise。 Love is the most powerful force on the planet, and ultimately the way you love determines who you are and how you experience life。

Touching on God, self-love, partners, children, family, and community, Common explores the core tenets of love to help us understand what it means to receive and, most importantly, to give love。 He moves from the personal—writing about his daughter, to whom he wants to be a better father—to the universal, where he observes that our society has become fractured under issues of race and politics。 He knows there’s no quick remedy for all of the hurt in the world, but love—for yourself and for others—is where the healing begins。

In his first public reveal, Common also shares a deeply personal experience of childhood molestation that he is now confronting。。。and forgiving。

Courageous, insightful, brave, and characteristically authentic, Let Love Have the Last Word shares Common’s own unique and personal stories of the people and experiences that have led to a greater understanding of love and all it has to offer。 It is a powerful call to action for a new generation of open hearts and minds, one that is sure to resonate for years to come。

Editor Reviews

"Common is a 360-degree human being, and I don't say that about many people。 He never needed to "pimp the hood" to achieve his deserved success。 He is an eloquent and honorable role model and his memoir is a perfect example of his depth as a human being。 In addition, reading about his childhood and upbringing in Chicago is really a trip - because we went through so many of the same experiences albeit decades apart。 Chicago is still the roughest and primary "Institution of Hard Knocks," and if you can make it there, you can truly make it anywhere!

I love how open and vulnerable Common allowed himself to be!

Was an ok read, I increased the rating as it improved towards the end。 Prior to that, as much as I love Common, there was some repetitive things said。 I would have enjoyed as part of a conversation more than a book。 However it being a memoir and a level of transparency shown, it was cool。

Listened to the audio book。 I enjoy Common as an artist and his voice in general, yet I found bits of this preachy。 I can appreciate this book as a self reflection to approaching relationships in your life。 It's important to understand that communication isn't what you're saying, but instead what the other person is hearing, and I think he hits on that a good bit。 Audio book was about 5 hours, so not too long。 Listened to the audio book。 I enjoy Common as an artist and his voice in general, yet I found bits of this preachy。 I can appreciate this book as a self reflection to approaching relationships in your life。 It's important to understand that communication isn't what you're saying, but instead what the other person is hearing, and I think he hits on that a good bit。 Audio book was about 5 hours, so not too long。 。。。more

Reading this book was insightful to learn Common has issues with allowing himself to fully embrace the ideal of how he chooses to love his partner, daughter, people and family。 The levels of loving people, children, wife, husband and God are all different displaces of meanings and emotions。

So many gems! This book was an amazing read。 Not only do you get more insight into who Common is as an artist but also so many good points and gems regarding loving yourself and others with the love of God。

This was a decent read。 I love the message that Common delivers but there wasn't any incredibly profound philosophical incite。 There really wasn't any incredible novel philosophical insight offered。 However, if you are interested in the man himself, he gives readees a very endearing glimpse into his life。 He offers this frame of reference as examples for how he does try to utilize the philosophical mindset of the importance of love and all its parts。 Common also draws on his faith in Christianit This was a decent read。 I love the message that Common delivers but there wasn't any incredibly profound philosophical incite。 There really wasn't any incredible novel philosophical insight offered。 However, if you are interested in the man himself, he gives readees a very endearing glimpse into his life。 He offers this frame of reference as examples for how he does try to utilize the philosophical mindset of the importance of love and all its parts。 Common also draws on his faith in Christianity repeatedly but it doesn't come across as too preachy or biblical。 。。。more

Whew! After I finished reading this book by the rapper and actor Common, I must admit that this book is a piece of false advertising。 It says on the front cover that it's a memoir but after reading two-hundred pages of this, I can firmly say that this is a rip-off。 This is not a memoir, it's just a book, a non-fiction book theorizing on what love is according to Common or the author who really wrote this book。 However, from reading this cover to cover, I was impressed on Common's assumed religio Whew! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am usually a big fan of nonfiction memoirs。 I looked forward to Let Love Have the Last Word, as I am a fan of Common as an actor and rap artist。 That being said, I didn’t love the book。 If I had to round up, I’d give it a solid 2。5 stars。 I did listen to the audio version at 1。75 and appreciated hearing it in the author’s voice。 The positives: I am a quote person, and he starts each chapter with a quote。 My favorite is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The purpose of life is not to be happy。 It is to b I am usually a big fan of nonfiction memoirs。 I looked forward to Let Love Have the Last Word, as I am a fan of Common as an actor and rap artist。 That being said, I didn’t love the book。 If I had to round up, I’d give it a solid 2。5 stars。 I did listen to the audio version at 1。75 and appreciated hearing it in the author’s voice。 The positives: I am a quote person, and he starts each chapter with a quote。 My favorite is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The purpose of life is not to be happy。 It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well。” He is very honest and open and vulnerable。 His point of view is straightforward。 His love of God, his family, friends & fans is evident。 He relies on scripture to help support his thoughts。What could be improved: I didn’t feel there was good flow to this book。He repeated himself in more than one spot。 I think if he would have gone deeper into some stories or given other examples, it would have been better than repeating himself。 He needed a better editor to make this a more cohesive narrative。 Overall, I didn’t hate it, but it wouldn’t be first on my list of recommendations。 。。。more

Finished this a while back。 Forgot to mark it off。 I wanted to like this so much because Common seems like such a lovely man, but I just didn’t take to it :/ maybe if I try at another time, I’ll feel differently though。

It took me a while to get into this one。 The style is part biography, part self-help, part processing。 However, once I got there, I really appreciated Common's vulnerability and insistence on being real about where he is at and what he has gone through。 It took me a while to get into this one。 The style is part biography, part self-help, part processing。 However, once I got there, I really appreciated Common's vulnerability and insistence on being real about where he is at and what he has gone through。 。。。more

Common is a beautiful man and wonderful human being through his music, acting, and writing。 I aspire to be as emotionally intelligent and wise as he is。 He's very easy to admire and idolize and his memoir gives a look into his personal life, where we see where he came from and what he feels when he's not performing。 There's a lot you don't know about a person, especially a celebrity, that makes you forget they're human as well。 Lastly, his views on the world align greatly with Fred Rogers and my Common is a beautiful man and wonderful human being through his music, acting, and writing。 I aspire to be as emotionally intelligent and wise as he is。 He's very easy to admire and idolize and his memoir gives a look into his personal life, where we see where he came from and what he feels when he's not performing。 There's a lot you don't know about a person, especially a celebrity, that makes you forget they're human as well。 Lastly, his views on the world align greatly with Fred Rogers and my own views, in spreading love and being a good person。 This book is inspiring, uplifting, and great to listen to/read at any time as a mantra or way to motivate yourself。 。。。more

I went into this assuming it was your typical memoir, but it’s so much more。 Common takes on the very ambitious subject of love - I have to admit I was rolling my eyes in the beginning。 However, sharing his personal journey on the acknowledgment and acceptance of different variations of love - a exploration brought on by a conversation with his adult daughter, it became more relatable。 “By being honest with you, your loved one is doing the work。 So it’s super important, I think, to see and respe I went into this assuming it was your typical memoir, but it’s so much more。 Common takes on the very ambitious subject of love - I have to admit I was rolling my eyes in the beginning。 However, sharing his personal journey on the acknowledgment and acceptance of different variations of love - a exploration brought on by a conversation with his adult daughter, it became more relatable。 “By being honest with you, your loved one is doing the work。 So it’s super important, I think, to see and respect where their effort ends and where yours should begin。”I started bookmarking this way more than I care to admit。 His words are so humble, so insightful, I was nodding and mmhmming audibly throughout the whole book。 “To love God, no matter the name, and no matter the religion, is to make a wholehearted reach toward the universal, to come to see for oneself that in spite of the lonely feelings we have as individual people, each of us can still stand on our own two feet, supported by a higher, deeper power。“I did have one minor vice with his need to include excessive dialogue。 For example: “I said hi and he said hi back, and then he said, I liked you in John Wick and I said thanks。” I expected his writing to be better since he brought us such albums like Water For Chocolate。 Perhaps his intention was to have this read like an intimate conversation。Setting that aside, this book was an unexpected treat and a much needed form of therapy as we close out a challenging year。 。。。more

If you’re a big fan of Common then you might enjoy this。 The writing was very disjointed and lacked flow which for a rapper seems worrisome。 But I suppose we can blame the “helper” Mensah Demari。 Oh well, still some interest insights。

Good bookCommon has an overarching view of the word love and he uses the word in every paragraph of the bookI was not a fan of thisI did like how open he was at a few moments in the book, especially in the end when he talks about being molested as a childUnfortunately though, instead of this book being biographical it was mainly about his problems with intimacy and not letting girlfriends get close to himI would recommend this book to anyone who likes poetry

A man who is after God‘s own heart 🙌🏾 this book was a tap on the shoulder to let me know that I’m still human but to be a little more forgiving to others, even when they’re undeserving。 I LOVE how connected Common is to God, as we should all be。 To use the Bible daily as a guide through life。 I’m nowhere near Christ-like love because I still get angry, impatient, and sometimes prideful but so thankful that this book has reeled me in as a reminder that God isn’t done with me ❤️❤️

Common’s reflection on love is beautiful, and I think poignant, particularly in this age where vulnerability is an afterthought, or avoided all together。 To me, his musings felt very relatable, some of the same reflections I’ve had myself。 I enjoyed sifting through his thoughts but I can see how the book might lack appeal to some - it does feel like a journey thru his brain, nerve endings firing off。 It’s a quick, easy read。 3。5 stars。
